Sets up and operates one or more electrical discharge machines to shape metal workpieces to specifications.


  • Examines blueprints of products and plans operations
  • Positions and secures workpieces on machine tables
  • Positions and secures electrode in holder on surface plate, verifying concentricity, alignment and depth; threads wire through machine
  • Mounts electrode and holder or wire strand and verifies alignment of electrode or wire and workpiece
  • Turns valve to adjust flow of dielectric coolant over electrode and workpiece or to immerse them in circulating bath
  • Adjusts controls to adjust machine setting such as voltage, current, frequency, and electrode or wire feed rate
  • Starts machine and observes operation
  • Moves controls to adjust for optimal machine operation
  • Inspects completed workpiece visually and with measuring instruments
  • Computes settings from specifications and knowledge of machine capacities
  • Communicates with Toolmakers to assure satisfactory results in the finished piece
  • Programs wire machines using Pro Engineering & Esprit software

  • Must be able to use a PC with MS Office and navigate the Plex ERP system


  • High School Diploma or equivalent, plus and Associate’s degree or 1-3 years’ machine setup experience and / or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability and desire to problem solve and carry out instructions
  • Able to read, write and speak fluent English
  • Must have mechanical aptitude
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints and make valid conclusions which determine the fit and function of components fabricated from those drawings
  • Must have the ability to interpret mechanical drawings. The ability to understand an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form is a plus
  • Ability to accurately complete basic mathematics functions
  • Ability to measure parts with calipers, micrometers, or various job specific gages
  • Preferred understanding of the function and capabilities of the components of multislides, presses, sensor technology, and other production equipment
